SURREY BROWN CAPS V
WARWICKSHIRE BEARS at Edgbaston (Pro40
League), 25 AUGUST 2008
Since 2003 these two sides have traded wins in limited-overs cricket. On that
basis, then, Surrey should win tomorrow's clash. Yeah, right! But if you think
the Brown Caps let themselves down at Cardiff at least they didn't get bowled
out for 88, which was what happened to the Warwickshire Bears on Friday night.
At one stage the Brummies were 29 for eight, which was a major surprise given
the form of Jonathan Trott, who has scored 431 runs at an average of 61.57 in
List A cricket this summer thanks to hundreds against Northants in both the FPT
and the Pro40. Tony Frost, Darren Maddy and Ian Westwood have also had their
moments, each of them having scored two half-centuries so far. More often than
not Neil Carter, who is doubtful for this match due to a back problem, has got
Warwickshire off to a brisk start. England wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose is available
to play tomorrow, but his three List A innings in county cricket this summer
have resulted in just 33 runs.
Chris Martin, the Bears' current overseas signing, has been the star
performer with the ball in one-day cricket recently. But over the season as a
whole, Carter has bagged the most wickets (16 List A victims at 19.00 runs
apiece), thanks to the trio of three-fers he took in the Friends Provident
earlier this season. Ant Botha's slow left-arm spin has been a little bit
expensive, but as he showed against Leicestershire at the end of last month, by
claiming a List A career best 5-43, the South African isn't the best man to whom
you should try and force the pace. James Anyon and Naqqash Tahir have been
economical, but both have had injury problems.

v Warwickshire List A Records sheet as at the start of the 2008 season.
Usman Afzaal is 11 runs away from 5,000 runs in List A cricket. James Benning is
set to make his 75th one-day appearance. Mark Ramprakash has 12,476 career runs
in List A cricket, including 14 hundreds. For the home side, Tim Groenewald is
on the brink of his 25th one-day outing.
Alex Tudor looks set to make his first one-day appearance for Surrey since
August 2004, when he made 56 off 70 balls against Lancashire at Whitgift. The
only other change to the Brown Caps side that drew with Sussex in the County
Championship is likely to be Saqlain Mushtaq making way for Matthew Spriegel.
But Robert Frylinck, who took 3-52 against Northants in the Pro40 last week
doesn't even get into the 13-man squad for Edgbaston.

Based on the fact that Surrey have not won on their last four one-day visits to
Edgbaston, their luck has got to change at some point. Also, anyone who played
worse than we did at Cardiff cannot honestly call themselves a first-class
county, because the Brown Caps performance there was embarrassing.
