WARWICKSHIRE V SURREY at Edgbaston (SSCC1), 21-24 APRIL 2017
Both teams started the campaign
as 5-1 joint favourites to win the title this year. However,
Warwickshire have sunk rapidly to two successive innings defeats - one of them
inflicted by Surrey, of course - while the Oval outfit, after the
high of an opening round victory travel to Birmingham for the
re-match knowing
that one swallow doesn't amount to a summer. Lancashire bossed days
one to three against Surrey for long periods, particularly when they
seized the initiative after
slumping to 122 for six on the opening day at the Oval, having
elected to bat first. For the record, Shiv Chanderpaul and Jordan
Clark's 243-run alliance was the highest ever conceded by Surrey for
the seventh wicket in the County Championship.
Still, Warwickshire would
readily swap their doubts for those of their visitors. The Bears
have much to ponder, especially with the bat. The absence of opener
Ian Westwood, through injury, does nothing to help Warwickshire's
plight. Only Jonathan Trott (164 championship runs at 41.00), Jeetan
Patel (40.66) and Keith Barker (29.25) are averaging over twenty.
Keeper-batsman Tim Ambrose has already twice failed to trouble
scorers and Sam Hain - of whom much is still expected - has just
five runs to his name to show for four visits to the crease. While
Patel has swung the willow to decent effect late on, a bowling
average of 47.66 after two outings is not what anyone was
anticipating from arguably the most consistent overseas player on
the county circuit in recent years.
Surrey v
Warwickshire - First-Class Records Sheet
If he plays, Surrey's Jade Dernbach will be
making his 100th first-class appearance. Scott Borthwick goes into
this contest 40 runs shy of the 7,500 f-c career mark. Similarly,
his former Durham team-mate Mark Stoneman is 48 runs short of
8,000. Of the hosts, Warwickshire's Keith Barker, with 296, is closing
in on 300 f-c career wickets.
For the third match running, Surrey have named the same 13-man
squad.

Just three of the last 16 championship meetings between Warwickshire
and Surrey at Edgbaston have ended in a draw. During that time it
has been a case of honours even, with Surrey scoring 7 wins the
Bears six. On the last three occasions the Oval outfit have won the
toss at Birmingham, comfortable championship victories have ensued.
Since 1997, their only victory there after losing the toss came in
2007. With no rain forecast for the first three days and
Warwickshire opening their 2017 account with two heavy defeats,
Surrey - notwithstanding their shaky performance against Lancashire
last weekend - must start as favourites. Prediction: a victory for
the visitors.
