SURREY LIONS V
WARWICKSHIRE BEARS (TSL2), 5 JUNE 2005
According to the odds-setters Warwickshire are the marginal favourites for
tomorrow's encounter at Whitgift School. The only team that both have reached a
conclusion with this summer in the totesport League are the Scottish Saltires.
The Scots gave both a fright, but whereas the Lions prevailed the Bears went
down to an embarrassing one-wicket defeat, at Stratford-upon-Avon last Sunday.
Other than Nick Knight, whose current one-day record is
364 runs at an average of 72.80, the Bears' line-up has not put the sort of runs
on the board they are capable of. Only Trevor Penney and Jim Troughton have also
made limited-overs half-centuries this term. It is a similar story when
Warwickshire have been in the field. Heath Streak (18 wickets at 11.83 runs
apiece) currently has an economy rate of 3.54, but he will not be supported in
the attack tomorrow by anyone who is going for less than 4.72 runs per over,
which is the mark 22-year-old seamer James Anyon has managed.
Down the years, though, Surrey's established batsmen have
struggled against the Bears. Jonathan Batty averages 33.75 against them, just
ahead of Mark Ramprakash (30.41), Alistair Brown (30.37) and Rikki Clarke
(32.00). Scott Newman has met them twice and made ducks on each occasion, but in
his only appearance against Warwickshire, at Guildford last year, James Benning
hit 71. Of the Lions' bowlers Tim Murtagh has the best record - five wickets at
an average of 14.00, but in 17 matches Martin Bicknell has conceded an average
of 3.73 runs per over against them.
Nick Knight has averaged 41.63 with the bat when he has
come up against Surrey in his List A one-day cricket career. Should he play,
Michael Powell averages 17.00 against the Lions. With the ball, Dougie Brown has
taken 22 wickets at 23.54 runs apiece, but has conceded 5.28 runs per over
against them.
Five out of the six one-day contests to have taken place at Whitgift have been
won by the side batting first, but with rain forecast to arrive halfway through
the reply tomorrow, it will be an interesting call. History would suggest that
anything over 250 will represent a challenging total, even with the shorter
boundaries on offer at Whitgift School. The key, therefore, will be who will
major with the bat. With Aussie new boy Dominic Thornely likely to join a
line-up including Newman and Brown -
who made 116 off 108 balls against the Bears at Croydon in 2001 - the Lions
should prevail.
At long last Surrey have got enough fit players to give themselves a selection
headache. Assuming that Thornely and Harbhajan are inked in for all of the
championship fixtures their availability will allow them to play, Steve Rixon
will probably see the totesport League as the stage for his up-and-coming
players like James Benning, Nayan Doshi, Tim Murtagh and Neil Saker. To
accommodate these four it would seem logical for Mohammad Akram (averaging 8.28
runs per over in one-day cricket), Rikki Clarke (badly bruised finger) and
Richard Clinton (deemed to be more of a four-day batsman) to make way from the
eleven which drew with Warwickshire in the championship match that ended today.
N Carter, N Knight (capt), J Troughton, A Loudon, J Trott, T Penney, D Brown, T
Frost (wk), H Streak, N Warren and J Anyon
