SURREY
V WARWICKSHIRE at the Kia Oval (Royal One-Day London Cup)
7 AUGUST 2022
After gaining revenge over Durham for last summer's semi-final
defeat, Surrey might only have opened their Royal London account with a
loss and a victory, but the confidence the young guns will have
gained at Gosforth puts them in good stead against a Warwickshire
team weakened almost as much by The Hundred as the South Londoners.
In fact, no other county is providing more England-qualified
players to this year's 100-ball jamboree than Surrey and
Warwickshire, who, between them, will be missing a total of 24
during the Royal London (or 22 per cent of all those drafted for The
Hundred).
Warwickshire come into this contest with a thumping victory over
Gloucestershire at Cheltenham - sealed with more than 10 overs to
spare, with Dominic Sibley hitting an unbeaten 106 - under the
belts.
Last summer, the Bears finished sixth in Surrey's Royal London
group with four wins and four defeats. The batting was led by Matt
Lamb, who made 360 runs at an average of 60.00, Rob Yates (282 at
40.28) and Michael Burgess (275 at 39.28).
Arguably the biggest plus was Jacob Bethell's all-round
contributions. The slow left-armer took 11 wickets at 27.36 runs
apiece as well as averaging 23.50 with the bat to put himself in the
shop window for The Hundred.
This year's bowling line-up for the Royal London carries far more
experience, with Oliver Hannon-Dalby, who was absent in 2021, firing
on all guns in the County Championship right now (46 wickets at
22.08), the inclusion of Indian all-rounder Krunal Pandya, as well
as Liam Norwell, who is fit again following a back injury.
Skipper Will Rhodes (who averaged 18.12 with the ball in last
summer's Royal London), Ethan Brooks and Craig Miles complete the
supporting cast.
Surrey v
Warwickshire - List
A Records Sheet
Nathan Barnwell is named in
Surrey's squad, so could be set to make his professional debut.
Similarly, Warwickshire's Hamza Shaikh and Che Simmons might be
handed List A debuts. Either way, Matt Lamb (421) and
Rob Yates (435) are coming up to 500 List A career runs, while Craig
Miles will start with 49 one-day wickets.
Surrey have named an unchanged 12-man squad.

Despite Surrey's magnificent display at
Gosforth, it's Warwickshire who will start as favourites, due, no
doubt, to the experience they can draw on from the likes of Dominic
Sibley, Will Rhodes, Krunal Pandya and Oliver Hannon-Dalby.
Curiously, each of the last 6 List A games
involving Surrey have been won by the side batting second.
Prediction - more eye-catching performances from the hosts' young
guns, but the Bears to win the 50th List A meeting between Surrey
and Warwickshire.
