SURREY LIONS V WARWICKSHIRE BEARS at the AMP Oval (NL1), 4 MAY 2003
Surrey have a good limited-overs record against tomorrow's
visitors, which is reflected in their odds for the game - 4/9 on compared with
Warwickshire's price of 13/8 At the Oval, however, the Lions have only
tasted success once in the last five meetings between the two teams.
In their first one-day outing of the summer Warwickshire gave
a less than convincing display against Yorkshire, who won on the Duckworth-Lewis
method. Apart from skipper Ashley Giles, who turned his side's innings
around with an unbeaten 61 off 66 balls and followed it up with two for 29 off
nine overs, all of the Bears' players had a day to forget.
Without Shane Bond the visitors are disinclined to risk Alan
Richardson in one-day cricket and with Melvyn Betts not considered suited to the
short game, the visitors' attack looks too inexperienced to keep the likes of
Brown and Hollioake quiet for long.
The last time these two faced one another Alistair Brown made
a spectacular 116 in 108 deliveries. The next highest scorer in the whole
contest was Gareth Batty with thirty-seven!
Surrey should win, but it will be interesting to see if seamers Graham Wagg, 20,
and Nick Warren, 21, can give a good first impression.
Only one change is expected to the team that beat the Essex Eagles by 15 runs
last week - Alec Stewart in for Jonathan Batty. But, Jimmy Ormond is on
standby should it prove too early for Martin Bicknell to return from his
illness.
M Wagh, N Knight, D Brown, D Ostler, I Bell, J Troughton, A Giles
(capt), M Sheikh, K Piper
(wk), G Wagg and N Warren.
