SURREY LIONS V SUSSEX SHARKS at Guildford
(CB 40League), 8 AUGUST 2010
Surrey go into this contest buoyed by their
record-breaking total on Wednesday night. But this will be a big
test for the Lions. Sussex have beaten Surrey in five out of the
last seven limited-overs clashes between these two teams.
With the Sharks likely to start with three
spinners, it will be interesting to see how they will cope with the
short boundaries, especially those square of the wicket. Monty
Panesar and Michael Yardy have been Sussex's two most economical
bowlers in the Clydesdale Bank 40. However, Ollie Rayner's off-spin
hasn't always come off. But in James Kirtley (16 CB40 wickets at
19.37 runs apiece) and Yasir Arafat, the Martlets have two highly
respected one-day seamers.
The batting also looks strong, even with Luke
Wright being rested for tomorrow's encounter. Chris Nash (334 CB40
runs at an average of 41.75), Ed Joyce and Murray Goodwin have all
looked impressive in the CB40. Whilst Yardy, Andrew Hodd and Joe
Gatting have looked off colour, all three are capable of keeping the
scoreboard ticking over.

Surrey's one-day record at Guildford has been dreadful in recent
years - three losses on the trot and, perhaps, counting. Sussex are
also a very capable limited-overs outfit. If Hamilton-Brown and
Davies get the Lions off to a flier, it will be close contest, but
by gut feeling tells me that the Sharks will be too powerful.

Arafat, R Aga, O Rayner, J Kirtley and M Panesar.
