SURREY V MIDDLESEX at the Kia Oval (Royal London One-Day Cup), 25 APRIL 2019

So, Surrey are off and running in this year's Royal London at long last. However, their 65-run victory over Essex at the Oval yesterday came at a cost - Jason Roy wricking his back early in the piece, Rikki Clarke having to withdraw with six of his overs still to be bowled (after dislocating a finger) and Ollie Pope injuring a shoulder attempting to prevent a boundary.

For Middlesex, the arrival of New Zealand's Ross Taylor means new supremo Stuart Law has an awkward decision to make - who makes way? If it came down purely to form then Paul Stirling (45 runs in three Royal London innings) would be the obvious candidate, but the North Londoners are already lacking in terms of white-ball openers. With Stevie Eskinazi, Nick Gubbins and Dawid Malan averaging 84.00, 77.50 and 42.00 respectively, it would be harsh, though logical, to give George Scott a temporary breather. With the ball, Tom Helm, Tim Murtagh and Nathan Sowter (7 wickets at 26.71 runs apiece in the Royal London) have all impressed at various times and Steven Finn now appears to be preferred to Toby Roland-Jones.

Tom Curran relishes one-day clashes with Middlesex - he averages 12.33 runs per wicket against the North Londoners. It's a pity, therefore, that a knee injury discounts him. The highest individual List A score v Middlesex among Surrey's current crop is the match-winning 86 Ben Foakes made at Lord's last June.

Surrey v Middlesex - List A Records Sheet

Middlesex's Steven Finn needs just one more wicket for his 200th in List A one-day cricket.

Surrey are beset with injury problems, but, on the plus side, Jordan Clark and Dean Elgar both look set to make their first appearances of the season.

The last six List A London Derbies have been won by the team batting last, but, going by the weather forecast, this contest could come down to a Duckworth-Lewis calculation. Morkel and Plunkett will be key to Surrey winning this one on the evidence of the last game. Can they combine again? Of course they can - Surrey to extend their successful one-day run against Middlesex.
