SURREY BROWN CAPS V MIDDLESEX PANTHERS at Guildford (Pro40 League),
19 JULY 2009
Five out of the last seven winners of the Guildford Festival's one-day game
have batted first and, of the last four, Surrey have only
triumphed in one. So, if Middlesex win the toss and bat, you may want to
think about leaving early to beat the traffic.
In the Friends Provident Trophy earlier this season, the Panthers had few
complaints with their batsmen, but, truth be told, their bowlers proved
expensive more often than not. Skipper Shaun Udal was the only bowler with
reason to look back on the FPT proudly, having taken seven wickets in eight
appearances and enjoyed an economy rate of 4.27 runs per over. With ten victims
at 32.30 runs apiece, Steve Finn was Middlesex's leading wicket-taker. But the
good news is that Tim Murtagh is fit again to face his old county. Let's not
forget, in 2008 his List A record was 20 wickets at an average of 26.95.
With the bat in List A cricket, last year's stand out performer for the North
Londoners was Eoin Morgan, who hit 410 runs at an average of 34.16. This term he
is averaging 40.28. Wicketkeeper batsman, Ben Scott is averaging 41.50 and Nick
Compton tops the list with an average of 49.00. But, for the danger man for
Surrey, look no further than Owais Shah, who has a superb one-day record against
the Brown Caps. His last nine List A innings against the Oval outfit have read:
112, 42, 50*, 74, 110, 76, 50, 55* and 1.

v Middlesex List A Records sheet as at the start of the 2009 season.
Assuming he plays, Middlesex's Nick Compton is making his 50th List A
appearance.
Chris Adams said he would use the Pro40 League to give opportunities to the
youngsters. True to his word the Surrey side has an unfamiliar look about it.
Only Usman Afzaal, Jade Dernbach, Chris Jordan, Chris Schofield and Matthew
Spriegel are the common denominator with the side that took on Yorkshire in the
Pro40 at Guildford twelve months ago. Stewart Walters retains the captaincy.

Middlesex have, by some way, had the better of their one-day clashes with Surrey
in recent years and, sadly, I don't really see that changing tomorrow.
