SURREY BROWN CAPS V
LEICESTERSHIRE FOXES at the Brit Oval (Pro40
League), 13 SEPTEMBER 2008
Surrey have won their last three National League meetings with Leicestershire,
two of them pretty comfortably. But, let's face it, there is nothing, save
pride, to play for as far as these sides are concerned. So, expect one or two
unfamiliar faces to make an appearance.
The Foxes' key man in this season's Pro40 League has been Dillon du Preez,
who has scored 203 runs at an average of 67.66 in addition to taking 7 wickets;
albeit expensively. Du Preez scored an unbeaten 107 off 73 balls in the one-run
defeat to Yorkshire on August 3. A week later Jacques Du Toit also passed three
figures when he made 144 against Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay. Matthew Boyce, Paul
Nixon and Tom Smith (on loan from Lancashire) have all chipped in with fifties;
so too has Boeta Dippenaar, although the veteran of 38 Tests for South Africa
has generally had a disappointing season with the bat.
With the ball, the damage has generally been done by Claude Henderson, who
has taken nine wickets in the Pro40 League at 28.88 runs apiece with his slow
left-armers. But, like so many of his colleagues, economical is not a word one
could apply to Henderson in recent weeks. Only Nadeem Malik and Garnett Kruger
are going for less than 5.25 runs per over in this summer's 40-over competition.
If they play, watch out for 18-year-old leg-spinner James Taylor and 20-year-old
seamer Sam Cliff.

v Leicestershire List A Records sheet as at the start of the 2008 season.
James Benning is 42 runs away from 2,500 List A career runs. Of the
Leicestershire contingent, Dillon du Preez is set to make his 50th List A
appearance, while Tom Smith is going into his 25th.
Given the way Surrey surrendered to the Spitfires last Tuesday week one could
argue that the second eleven wouldn't have fared much worse, so I have no
argument with tomorrow's youthful looking line-up which could well include the
likes of Laurie Evans, Lee Hodgson and Stuart Meaker.

Two sides of limited experience, with nothing to play for. Do I really have to
say who I think will win? Hmmm, okay then - Surrey.
