SURREY LIONS V KENT SPITFIRES at the Brit Oval (TSL1), 13 JUNE 2004
These two sides have thus far failed to light up
Division One of the totesport League. That said, they come into the match
on the back of wins in the competition. Kent enjoyed putting a dent in the Lancashire Lightening's title aspirations by beating them by 56 runs at Tunbridge Wells
last Sunday. However, had Matt Walker not kept Andrew Symonds company in a
fourth wicket stand of 170, the 29-year-old Queenslander would probably have run
out of partners and got nowhere near making 146 off 110 balls.
The secret is to deny Symonds strike or, better still,
get him out before he has played himself in. But given Surrey's lack of
penetrative one-day bowling the latter is likely to be easier said than done.
Apart from Symonds and Walker, the Spitfires' other dangers with the bat are David Fulton and
Robert Key, but Fulton missed this week's championship match against
Worcestershire due to the blow he received on a hand last Sunday and a migrane
forced Key to drop down the order today.
The key to Kent's attack are the spinners James Tredwell and
Rob Ferley, both of whom have economy rates below 3.80 in limited-overs cricket
this season. With Mohammad Sami an injury doubt and Martin Saggers on
England duty, tomorrow could well see Simon Cusden and Ben Trott take the new
ball, with that man Symonds operating as first change.
Assuming he plays tomorrow, Martin Bicknell will be making
his 250th National League appearance.
Surrey have surprisingly beaten Kent in their last four one-day meetings, spread
over three competitions. But with Andrew Symonds in such a rich vein of
form with both bat and ball, one has to say that he is likely to prove the
difference between the two sides tomorrow.
Rikki Clarke faces a fitness test on his right ankle.
Adam Hollioake (hamstring) and Ian Salisbury
(knee) hope to be fit for next week's championship
game against Gloucestershire. James Benning has
taken the cast off his right ankle and Alex Tudor is
awaiting results on his back injury, however Saqlain
Mushtaq could be out for longer than first expected.
M Carberry, R Key, A Symonds, E Smith,
M
Walker, D Fulton (capt), J Tredwell, N O'Brien (wk),
R Ferley, B Trott and S Cusden.
