SURREY BROWN CAPS V KENT SPITFIRES at the Brit Oval (Pro40 League), 2 SEPTEMBER 2008

Neither side will be advantaged in terms of their quest for promotion if this game falls victim to the weather, but I point that out simply because the forecasters are predicting rainfall for central London tomorrow night.

This will be the fifth meeting between these two teams this season in limited-overs cricket. Interestingly, the previous four have been won by the side batting first.

In the Pro40 League, Kent have enjoyed most of their success so far this campaign when Azhar Mahmood, Simon Cook and Robbie Joseph - who took 5-13 in the win over Derbyshire - have kept the flow of runs to a minimum. All three of the aforementioned seamers are going for 4.01 runs per over or less in the 40-over format. But it is fair to say that Ryan McLaren, James Tredwell and Amjad Khan have also had their moments recently.

With the bat, Darren Stevens has had two Pro40 knocks and made 96 runs at well in excess of a run a ball. Surrey are still trying to forget his innings of 119 not out from 77 balls at Canterbury in the FPT in May. But it is the Brown Caps' nemesis in all forms of cricket this summer, Martin van Jaarsveld, who has led the way with the willow for Kent in List A cricket this term by scoring 753 runs from ten completed innings.

If Surrey sign Shoaib Akhtar, this could well be the final game of Matt Nicholson's career. For Kent, Joe Denly has 928 runs in List A cricket and Robbie Joseph looks set to make his 25th one-day appearance.

Kent continue to look like one of the best limited-overs sides in the country to me, plus the Brown Caps are going for a third Pro40 win in succession, all of which points to a victory for the Spitfires!
