SURREY BROWN CAPS V KENT
SPITFIRES at the
Brit Oval (FPT), 5 MAY 2008
Kent's primary weakness in one-day cricket is that their batting is reliant
on Martin van Jaarsveld and Justin Kemp. So far, in this summer's Friends
Provident Trophy, Rob Key averages 7.66, Geraint Jones averages 11.00, Darren
Stevens averages 14.00 and Matt Walker is averaging 18.50. It was a similar
story last season when only Key and Andrew Hall (who is now plying his trade at
Northants) averaged over 35 with the bat in List A matches.
With the ball, Yasir Arafat leads the way this term with 7 wickets at an
average of 17.57. Simon Cook, who was the Spitfires' best one-day bowler in 2007
with 27 victims in List A cricket, has been economical, but has not yet been
among the wickets. Only the latter can be said of Azhar Mahmood, Ryan McLaren
and James Tredwell, however there are far worse supporting casts in the country
and Surrey will do well to treat the Kent attack with a certain amount of
caution.

v Kent List A Records sheet.
Alistair Brown has
19 one-day centuries to his name, while Mark Ramprakash has notched up fourteen.
With tomorrow's match being televised, expect Mark Ramprakash to come back into
the side, possibly at the expense of Usman Afzaal, whose first boundary today
was 38 balls in the making.

In recent years, Surrey have generally done well against Kent, particularly in
one-day cricket. The Spitfires' only victory so far in the Friends Provident
Trophy has been at the expense of the bottom side in the South East Division;
and that was achieved with just one ball to spare. Providing Azhar Mahmood does
not have a game to remember against his former county, Surrey should have enough
in their locker to make it two wins in as many days.
J Denly, R Key (capt), M van Jaarsveld, J Kemp, D Stevens, G Jones (wk), Azhar
Mahmood, R McLaren, J Tredwell, Yasir Arafat and S Cook.
Barry Dudleston and Neil Mallender. TV umpire - John Steele.
