SURREY V GLAMORGAN at the
Kia Oval (Royal London One-Day Cup), 6 JUNE 2018
If, by some miracle, Surrey do
make it through to the Royal London quarter-finals, don't ask me how
they pulled it off. Such were the margins of defeat against both
Somerset in the opener and against Kent last week, that wild
fluctuations in performance more than a lack of consistency has been
the Oval outfit's biggest problem in recent weeks. When a team needs
other results to go their way, as Surrey do, it invariably means the
table doesn't lie. But a relatively comfortable five-wicket victory
over Middlesex means there's still hope of the South Londoners sneaking in through the back
door.
Glamorgan just haven't got
going in the Royal London One-Day Cup. Other than white-ball
specialist and captain Colin Ingram (358 runs at an average of
59.66), there has been a severe shortage of runs. Nick Selman is
gradually get to grips with the role of one-day opener, but, sadly,
Nye Donald and David Lloyd haven't done anything to suggest they're
the answer to their side's top order woes.
With the ball, however, Michael
Hogan was as economical as anyone in the competition (until, that
is, he picked up a hamstring injury). Lukas Carey's medium pace has
also proved difficult to get hold of and Graham Wagg has chipped in
with wickets as well as a degree of economy. Looking at the Surrey
bowling attack, Gareth Batty (17 wickets at 19.76) and Sam Curran
both average less than twenty against Glamorgan.
Surrey v
Glamorgan - List
A Records Sheet
Scott Borthwick might be
waiting to be given his 100th List A outing, but I reckon we can
safely say Morne Morkel looks set to make his 150th. Approaching one
hundred one-day career wickets are Tom Curran (98) and Glamorgan's
Michael Hogan (99), while bearing down on 150 are Rikki Clarke and,
for the visitors, Graham Wagg; both of whom have 147 to their name.
Sam Curran returns from the Second Test, no doubt brimming with
confidence. That apart, Surrey are as you were.

Surrey have not lost to Glamorgan in one-day cricket at the Oval
since 2004; and their overall List A record against the Welshmen in SE11 is
P25 W19 L5 and one no result. So, barring a major upset, Rory
Burns's men should be too good for the side propping up the South
Group table; but what will happen elsewhere? Wins for Hampshire and
Kent are what Surrey also need in order to qualify for the knockouts.
