SURREY BROWN CAPS V
GLAMORGAN DRAGONS at the Brit Oval (Pro40 Division 2), 27 AUGUST 2007
With Kent and Yorkshire both suffering their first defeats in this season's
Pro40 League today, a number of sides in Division Two, including Surrey, have
been given renewed hope of finishing in one of the two automatic promotion
spots. The Brown Caps will also be buoyed by the fact that tomorrow's opponents,
Glamorgan, have just one win to show for their last six limited-overs visits to
SE11.
Losing Michael Powell to a freak injury has not helped the Dragons' cause
this summer, but their sheer hopelessness with the bat in one-day cricket still
takes some beating. The only bright spot has been the emergence of Tom Maynard
- the 18-year-old son of the former skipper, Matthew Maynard - who struck 71 on
his one-day debut, against Gloucestershire in the FP Trophy in June.
Apart from Maynard, the only other front-line batsmen who are averaging over twenty at
this stage are Jimmy Maher (24.66) and wicketkeeper Mark Wallace (23.28). Ben
Wright, 19, has been thrown in at the deep end and shown promise on occasions,
but more was expected of Robert Croft, Richard Grant and skipper David Hemp, who
has made ducks in all three of his Pro40 innings.
It seems to have gone unnoticed that England's Simon Jones has played seven
one-day games for the Welshmen this season, but that is probably because he has
hardly set the world alight. Many are saying he's finished, but given he is
still only 28 the chances of Jones being offered a new contract by another
county, if not Glamorgan, are fairly high. With his injury problems, though, it
would be risky to make his new deal anything but performance-related.
If the rest of the Dragons' bowling attack were paid on purely on performance
only Alex Wharf would be living on more than bread and water. The 32
year-old has taken 19 wickets at 22.10 runs apiece in List A cricket, though he
has also gone for 5.83 runs per over. Next best, judging simply by the wickets
column, has been Robert Croft with just five victims to show from seven List A
appearances. The only bowler who is conceding less than five an over is Dean
Cosker. And we all thought that Surrey had problems in the bowling department!
Mark Ramprakash has 11,981 List A career runs.

If there is one side you can virtually guarantee to lie down these days, then it
must be the Dragons of 2007. With Surrey claiming a morale-boosting Pro40 win
over the previously undefeated Yorkshire Phoenix at Scarborough today, I can
only see one outcome at the Oval tomorrow. A win for the Brown Caps.
