SURREY V GLAMORGAN
at the Brit Oval (FCC1), 11-14 MAY 2005
How time flies. It only seems a couple of weeks since Surrey
last played Glamorgan in the championship. Actually, looking at my diary, it was
a fortnight ago! Hopefully familiarity will not breed contempt because both
sides are looking for a morale boosting performance to set themselves up for
next week's high profile cup games.
In their opening three championship matches only one
Glamorgan batsman has made a century - Matthew Elliott (318 runs at an average
of 53.00) - and not one bowler has bagged a 'fifer'. Other than Elliott, history would suggest that the
only other player Surrey need to worry about is Mark Wallace. In three matches
against the Oval outfit the 23-year-old keeper has averaged 77.33 with the bat.
With Simon Jones (back) and Alex Wharf (rib) both missing,
the visitors will only have one bowler on show who is averaging less than 40.00
with the ball in this season's County Championship - Dean Cosker, who took four
wickets at 30.50 runs apiece in his only outing so far. With spin likely to play
a part, it is interesting to note that Robert Croft's 31 f-c career wickets against Surrey have come
at a cost of 49.96 runs apiece. Compare that with second fiddle Cosker, whose 18
have cost an average of 38.77.
If Adam Harrison, who has been added to the visitors squad,
appears alongside brother David, it would be the first time since 1983
that two brothers have played for Glamorgan in the championship
Both sides are under strength. For Surrey, perhaps the loss of Graham Thorpe through injury will turn out to be a good thing. The
veteran left-hander's replacement will be Richard Clinton, who has
recently become one of the stars of UCCE cricket. For Glamorgan, the bowling
looks extremely thin without Jones and Wharf and, if anything, their absence
will be the difference between these two teams. If the Oval surface yields more
for the bowlers than last weekend's one (though somehow I don't think it will)
the home side will definitely have the upper hand.
Tim Murtagh is available for selection again, but the following are all
discounted because of injury: Azhar Mahmood (shins), Mark Butcher (wrist), Ian
Salisbury (intercostal muscle), Philip Sampson (pelvis) and Graham Thorpe
(back). One definite change to the XI that entertained Notts is Clinton in for
Thorpe.
M Elliott, I Thomas, D Hemp, M Powell, J Hughes, M Wallace
(wk), R Croft (capt), D Thomas, D Harrison, D
Cosker and A Davies.
