SURREY BROWN CAPS V DERBYSHIRE PHANTOMS at Whitgift School (Pro40 League),
5 AUGUST 2009
The Pro40 League has not been a competition in which either team has excelled
of late, so it may be a case of the least worst side winning this one.
Derbyshire's recent record is three wins in 26 Pro40 matches (that said both of
their fixtures so far this summer have been wash-outs), while Surrey's is a
relatively respectable, if inconsistent nine victories from their last nineteen.
Even though the Phantoms have four batsmen averaging over 37 in List A
cricket this summer, only one, Wavell Hinds, has made over 225 runs in the
one-day arena this term. Other than the maximums struck by Hinds and Graham
Wagg, the rest of the Phantoms have just two six hits between them. Mind you, on
a ground the size of Whitgift it could be a different story after tomorrow.
With the ball, Derbyshire's attack has been economical if lacking a cutting
edge. To date, only Greg Smith has been an effective partnership breaker in List
A cricket. The left-arm seam of Wagg has generally been backed up by Tim
Groenewald's seam-up and Mark Lawson's leg-spin; but when he has been fit the
pick of the Phantoms' bowlers has been 23-year-old all-rounder Jon Clare.

v Derbyshire List A Records sheet as at the start of the 2009 season.
For Surrey, Gary Wilson currently has 49 dismissals in List A cricket; and for
Derbyshire, Ian Hunter goes into tomorrow's contest with 96 List A career
wickets to his name, while Greg Smith has 969 List A career runs.
With no sign of Mark Butcher being fit enough to play again this season, Stewart
Walters has, in effect, been handed the Surrey captaincy until the end of
September; but rumours abound that the Brown Caps are looking overseas for
Butcher's long-term replacement. With Andre Nel out for the next three weeks
with an injured elbow, Stuart Meaker has been added to the Surrey squad for this
match, as has former Whitgift School student Laurie Evans.

Surrey have lost on four out of their last five List A outings, but Derbyshire's
record in this competition stinks. The Brown Caps will not have a better
opportunity to get off the mark in the Pro40, even without the likes of Batty,
Nel and Ramprakash around.
C Rogers (capt), G Smith, G Park, W Hinds, S Law, D Redfern, G Wagg, F Klokker
(wk), T Groenwald, J Needham and I Hunter.
Martin Bodenham and Tim Robinson.
