SOMERSET SABRES V SURREY LIONS at Taunton (CB 40League), 29 AUGUST 2010

This game represents Surrey's biggest test of the season in the CB40. Chris Adams has said the Lions are at their best when the heat in on. They had better be, for Somerset have won 13 out of their last 14 List A meetings with Surrey.

After losing the final of the FPt20, you get the impression that the Cidermen have vowed to finish the season strongly in the Clydesdale Bank 40, if not the championship as well. Tomorrow, the Sabres certainly have the tools to secure a place in the CB40 semi-finals for themselves.

With the bat James Hildreth (440 runs at an average of 88.00 in the CB40), Zander de Bruyn and Jos Buttler are a formidable looking middle order trio. With Marcus Trescothick and Craig Kieswetter there to set Somerset on their way, the Taunton outfit are more than capable of racking up big totals.

The bowling boasts two of the current stars of one-day county cricket - Alfonso Thomas (15 wickets at 15.60 runs apiece in the CB40) and Murali Kartik, who is averaging 13.00 with the ball in List A cricket this summer. Max Waller, a 22-year-old leg-spinner, who has an economy rate of 4.81 in this year's CB40 is not to be underestimated either.

Stewart Walters, with 950, is approaching 1,000 runs in List A cricket.

Surrey are likely to make just one change to the eleven that beat the Unicorns at Wormsley last Sunday. Chris Tremlett, who was rested for that encounter, will replace Stuart Meaker.

OPPONENT DATE COMP RESULT VENUE SURREY OPPONENT
Unicorns 22 Aug 2010 NL Won By 66 Runs Wormsley 273-4 (40) 207-8 (40)
Sussex 8 Aug 2010 NL Lost By 6 Wickets Guildford 252 (39.5) 256-4 (38.2)

Lancashire 23 May 2010 NL Won By 8 Wickets Old Trafford 166-2 (23.5) 165 (39.3)

If Rory Hamilton-Brown and Steven Davies get Surrey off to a good start with the bat, the Lions have a chance, but, realistically, no more than that. In recent years Somerset have enjoyed a stranglehold over Surrey in one-day cricket. I don't see that ending tomorrow.

M Trescothick (capt), C Kieswetter (wk), N Compton, Z de Bruyn, J Hildreth, J Buttler, P Trego, B Phillips, A Thomas, M Kartik and M Waller.

Nigel Cowley and Trevor Jesty.
