KENT SPITFIRES V
SURREY LIONS at Canterbury (NCL1), 3 SEPTEMBER 2003 (Day/Night)
Kent's problem is that they have lacked consistency in
this year's National League.
The Spitfires have not managed two wins on the
trot. So, the good news for Surrey is that
David Fulton's men were victorious in their
last outing - a week ago at Bristol. That success was
set-up by a superb 101 by Matthew Walker - to
follow his 72 against the Warwickshire Bears -
and completed by Muttiah Muralitharan’s haul of five for 45.
Unsurprisingly, Walker is top of Kent’s NCL batting averages, with a record
of 517 runs at 57.44. Another man in the mix is
Andrew Symonds, who is available once more for the hop
county. Symonds has also been a key player with
the ball. In fact, both of
the Spitfires' overseas representatives have a reputation of being
frugal, so it will be a question of Surrey targeting
the likes of Ealham, Tredwell and Saggers in the absence of
Kent's leading wicket-taker in the National League, Ben Trott, who currently has
13 victims at 27.23 runs apiece to his name.
Tomorrow's visitors will be losing Saqlain Mushtaq and
Graham Thorpe to Test calls for the first time this season, however Surrey will
take heart from the fact that they have won their last six meetings with Kent in
all competitions.
Generally speaking, the Lions have not found Canterbury to be a happy hunting
ground in recent years. Add to this the absence of Martin Bicknell,
Saqlain Mushtaq and Graham Thorpe, on top of the usual international absentees,
and it is hard to see Surrey continuing their good run against the hop county.
Let's hope I'm wrong.
Mark Ramprakash returns. That ends the good news. Had they been
available, Martin Bicknell, Mark Butcher, Saqlain Mushtaq, Graham Thorpe and
Alex Tudor could all have anticipated being in the Lions' squad for tomorrow
night's encounter. Tim Murtagh, Scott Newman, Philip Sampson and Nadeem
Shahid have all been put on standby; and at least two will make rare first team
appearances.
M Carberry,
R Key, A Symonds, M Walker, M Ealham, G Jones (wk),
D Fulton (capt), J Tredwell, A Khan, M Saggers
and M Muralitharan.
