ESSEX V SURREY at Chelmsford (Royal London One-Day Cup), 27 MAY 2018
Fifth in the South Group plays
host to eighth; and given that both have already suffered two
defeats, it's safe to deduce whichever side
loses tomorrow's clash at Chelmsford can start making alternative
plans for the last Saturday in June. Surrey have a game in hand, and even though Virat Kohli is no longer coming, 18-year-old Will Jacks has cemented
his place at the top of a batting order that might
also benefit from the return of Mark Stoneman. The latter's 4 and 9
in the First Test could well see him getting the chop. But, hey, let's
focus on the positives - what an innings that was from Jacks last
Wednesday, when, at 19 years and 183 days, he became the youngest
player to hit a List A hundred for Surrey (beating the record held
by Jason Roy, who was 21 years and 27 days when he made 101 against
Warwickshire in 2011).
With five having already made
fifties in this competition this year, the Essex batting is a good
as you will come across. Varun Chopra (average 71.50) and Tom Westley have
both hit hundreds, while Ravi Bopara and Ashar Zaidi are ideal
coming in once a foundation has been laid. With the ball, captain Ryan ten Doeschate has a number of
options at his disposal including Zimbabwean Shane Snater, who,
apart from being Jason Roy's cousin, has represented the
Netherlands. Snater has also taken five Royal London wickets at 19.60 runs apiece.
Judging by the historical
stats, Jade Dernbach could be a big factor. His List A record
against Essex is 18 wickets at 18.00. With the bat, Ben Foakes has
an average of 122.00, which includes his 77 not out, in the
corresponding match at the Oval last year.
Surrey v
Essex - List
A Records Sheet
Rikki Clarke is set to make
his 225th List A appearance, while Essex's Ashar Zaidi goes
into tomorrow's contest with 2,930 List A runs.
Tom Curran is flying in from Kolkata; his IPL involvement having now
finished. But, alas, he isn't expected to feature at Chelmsford
tomorrow. Morne Morkel also hasn't been named in the Surrey squad, so
expect to see the same side that reeled in Gloucestershire with more
than four overs to spare to keep alive their Royal London hopes.

Surrey have lost seven out of their last nine List A one-day clashes
with Essex. Still, both victories during that period came at
Chelmsford (in 2008 and 2016), so it's not all bad news. I might
have to play my "too close to call" card here. Who knows, maybe the
weather will have the final say - although the forecast is for it to
be warm, they're also telling us to expect thundery showers.
